The Honourable Dr. Kellie Leitch today issued the following statement to mark the second annual Korean War Veterans Day:
“Today, we recognize and honour those who fought to defend the freedom of the people of South Korea during the Korean War.
“Our soldiers went above and beyond the call of duty during this significant period in Canadian history, demonstrating remarkable bravery and perseverance in the face of difficult conditions. These brave members of the Canadian forces played an integral role alongside fellow allies in defending the Republic of Korea. Over 26,000 Canadian soldiers fought during the Korean War, among whom 516 would make the ultimate sacrifice. These names are now inscribed in the Korean War Book of Remembrance.
“I encourage Canadians to pause, and take a moment to reflect on those who fought and sacrificed their lives to defend ideals we as Canadians continue to hold dear; including freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. These men and women in uniform came to the aid of South Korea, and we must ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten.”
