Statement by the Hon. Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, P.C., O.Ont., M.P., Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women
Toronto – March 18, 2014 – Today, the Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, P.C., O.Ont., M.P., Canada’s Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, issued the following statement on the retirement from Cabinet of the Honourable Jim Flaherty:
“I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to Minister Flaherty for his many years of public service, as well as for his support and guidance to me personally.
As Minister of Finance, he has been an economic leader who has excelled here at home, but has helped guide the global economy through one of the most difficult times in history. I know his leadership and council was recognized and valued by his colleagues internationally.
His record of accomplishment in Canada is truly impressive. Since 2006, Minister Flaherty has reduced taxes, eliminated wasteful spending, paid off debt and introduced ground-breaking programs for the benefit of all Canadians like the Tax Free Savings Account, the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit and the Registered Disability Savings Plan.
Over the years I worked with Minister Flaherty in my capacity as a physician, advising him on Government policy, and later as a Member of Parliament, and finally as a Cabinet colleague. He has been a mentor and a source of inspiration. I would like to thank him for his advice and friendship. He will be missed by me, Cabinet colleagues and all of the Canadians he touched over a long and illustrious political career.
I wish Minister Flaherty success in his future endeavors.”
